Battleship

Another short review for me, yes! Kind of to celebrate the exam today, my friends and I went to watch a movie at a nearby theater. We chose to watch Battleship. Quite a nice movie, in my opinion, it reminds me of Transformers series quite much, but this one is done at the sea. XD Well, I hope you enjoy reading it!

Obvious warning, spoilers ahead, as much as I try to keep it as superficial as possible, so do NOT read if you do NOT want to be spoiled!

Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs Battleship, an epic-scaled action-adventure that unfolds across the seas, in the skies and over land as our planet fights for survival against a superior force. Inspired by Hasbro's classic naval combat game, Battleship stars Taylor Kitsch as Lt. Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper's fiancee; Alexander Skarsgard as Hopper's older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper's crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone's superior (and Sam's father), Admiral Shane.

Art >> Like I mentioned before the graphics and effects reminded me of Transformers series so much. The battles were between modern battleships humans have and even more sophisticated ships brought by the aliens. They are all well-designed, even the destructive effects. So much things were blown up, similar to how the transforming autobots series are.

Music >> Music is one of the best traits of the movie, if I may say. I enjoyed the accompaniment of the plot throughout the time, they helped to build the impression of the movie, from happy moments to sad moments to awesome fights. The music is alive, strong, and stands out. While I'm not a big fan of such music, I have to say it made the watching experience much better. I even moved my body a bit as I was watching and listening, LOL~

Story Plot >> Actually the standard human-versus-alien story plot, just different in presentation and effects. I was late entering the theater so I missed several first minutes, perhaps that is why there were some confusing scenes, as to why the aliens would come to Earth because of signals or something. Their purpose is still unclear to me until the end of the story, to be honest. It was mentioned the aliens wanted to communicate with their homeland, but no further information. Not even introduction on who the aliens were, just a little bit here and there. I guess it makes sense that way since no communication with the aliens was possible. The plot is not very special for me. It isn't the one which made me want to see the movie; it was the art. I enjoyed the strategy games, though.

Some of my friends complained about the appearance of old navy members to help with the current crew to fight the aliens. While it is indeed strange (how can someone as old as, say, ~60 years, could manage to reload bullets or bombs?) and perhaps made the story to turn out in a weird way, I didn't really mind it. It was the humor part, and still enjoyable although a bit strange. XD

Characterization >> Who wouldn't be surprised with Rihanna playing in the movie? Although I didn't follow Rihanna but still it was surprising and nice to see her trying new area. Her character is pretty good one although only a supportive character. Very manly for a girl, like her image. :P The lead roles, like Hopper brothers, Captain Nagata, and other supportive navy members were fun and interesting too. I enjoyed the characters, how they matured and proved themselves depends on the situation. Taylor was very awesome; he wasn't so impressive at John Carter but he wins in this one. The Japanese actor too, great role and character there. All in all we had funny and serious moments, and everything was enjoyable.

In general, Battleship might not be a movie you want to watch if you seek for a strong and solid plot, but it is still an enjoyable movie. With all the effects and characterization, the plot becomes more lively compensating for the standard flow of the plot.
