Mirai Nikki

I finished another anime today, I decided it might be fun writing what I feel and think of series I watch. Well, like a review, but not as good as one those awesome reviews out there since I have never written a review on anime~ So don't be too harsh. :P

Obvious warning, spoilers ahead, as much as I try to keep it as superficial as possible, so do NOT read if you do NOT want to be spoiled!

Mirai Nikki

Episodes: 26
Status: Completed
Producers: Asread
Genres: Action, Mystery, Supernatural, Psychological, Thriller

Based on a manga with the same title, middle school 2nd year, Amano Yukiteru, is a boy who has problem making friends. He thinks of himself as a bystander and will always write down everything he sees in a cell phone diary.

Tormented by solitude, Yukiteru began to imagine things like a friend called Deus Ex Machina who is apparently the Lord of Time & Space. Seeing Yukiteru's miserable state, Deus gives him a new ability. His diary will now record events that will happen in the near future. Yukiteru is then forced to participate in a game which the winner will become Deus's successor.

Opening Theme: "Kuso Mesorogiwi" by Yousei Teikoku
Ending Theme: "Blood Teller" by Faylan

Art >> Graphic wise, I think it is pretty solid. Not anywhere awesome or very strong, but good enough not to make you want to divert your attention somewhere else. In the beginning I thought the art is rather poor, especially in how they draw Yukkii, but I got used to it along the way. Music wise, nothing stands out for me. The OP and ED are too creepy to be enjoyable, and none of the insert songs are impressive. Generally from this point of view there might not be much to expect. I think that is indeed the intention, since the main weight of this series is in the plot.

Story Plot >> The plot started simple but step by step it left you with twists and questions you were looking forward to the answer. You were only a student, a quiet one on top of that, far away from special events or busy life, and it all changed over a meet with a god who gave you a future diary. Game started. In addition to a drastic change in life, you ended up having one crazy, psycho stalker who would anything for you, destroy your enemies, all in return for your love. And lots of other secrets and other characters. Just creepy. Yet as the plot advanced, you saw more side of the characters and the story, and you had a dynamic like and dislike of the characters. I like the twists. The ending was rather sad, I think it was rather a cliffhanger, but well you could say it is a happy ending. For me the plot won, as twisted and psycho and abnormal and strange as it was. :D

Characterization >> Yukiteru (Yukkii) pissed me off many times, yet in a way it was understandable. He was just lost and sad and confused. He didn't know who to trust, and when the ones he trusted turned their back on him one by one, he just lost it all. I was glad when he took on the resolution although it made him strange. The ending was sad for him, but as I said before, cliffhanger. Take it to Yuno, the leading female and best psycho I have ever seen in anime. Completely neglect other things but Yukkii alone; everything for his safety and love from him. I loved how it eventually changed her deep inside without knowing it, that she had grown her human part after realizing how twisted she was. A brilliant planner with strategy in mind, and fighting skill, she was very dangerous but actually weak inside. Yukkii found that part and supported her. I actually loved the other diary owners as well; they added great flavors to the story. Minene was probably the one to stand the most from all of them because of her personality, then Kurusu, and the rest coming in. Basically speaking Mirai Nikki has various characters, each to their own uniqueness, which made the story awesome.

I didn't regret watching this anime though I was sometimes annoyed with the psychological element as it was too twisted. XD A great and fun journey. I don't want a sequel, just at least a glimpse of what the ending actually meant. Perhaps I should go check the manga, eh. :P

I keep meaning to watch this. Years ago I found some random icon and found out it was from the Mirai Nikki visual novel game so I read a summary about what it was about and was really interested in it. So when I heard the anime was being made I was so excited... and then never got around to watching it. >.> I think I will have to check it out soon now that it has ended. :3

Ahaha, I didn't even know there was a manga until you mentioned it. The manga came out four years before the novel did. I looked on Wikipedia and it said that they are re-releasing the game with the voice actors from the anime, along with new artwork and stuff.
